Quantum for Energy and Utilities: Key Opportunities for Energy Transition

Energy systems worldwide are facing mounting pressure. Rapid electrification, rising power demand from AI, growing cyber threats and the complexity of integrating renewables are reshaping how energy networks are planned and operated. As systems become more interconnected, traditional digital tools increasingly struggle to handle the scale and uncertainty of modern energy challenges. This is where quantum technologies are beginning to open new possibilities

Developed by the World Economic Forum in collaboration with Aramco, this report explores how quantum computing, sensing and communication could enhance capabilities across energy generation, grid infrastructure and essential services. The report highlights four opportunity areas: accelerating clean-energy materials innovation, improving operational optimization, strengthening infrastructure security and enabling more precise monitoring. It also outlines a pragmatic path from early pilots to broader adoption.

Engaging early with quantum technologies can help energy leaders improve efficiency, resilience and long-term adaptability. The report emphasizes that progress will depend on coordinated action in standards, workforce development, cybersecurity readiness and cross-sector collaboration to translate early experimentation into real-world impact.
