Activity is concentrated in a limited number of sectors and countries, and technological novelty is often prioritized over ecosystem readiness in data infrastructure, governance, financing models and institutional capacity.
Written in collaboration with Impact Intelligence, EY, Microsoft, and SAP, this insight report, AI for Impact: The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Social Innovation in Asia, draws on a dataset of more than 2,800 AI-for-impact initiatives across 10 economies. It provides tailored insights for different ecosystem archetypes based on how state-led or entrepreneurial the system is, and its level of capacity.
It leads with examples of AI applications to support community health workers, ease administrative burdens or enhance fundraising efforts and improve microentrepreneurial coordination. By addressing institutional, financial and ethical (rather than purely technical) barriers, ecosystems can pave the way for systemic change, shared infrastructure and safe, equitable adoption.
