Tyrone Jue is Director of the San Francisco Environment Department, where he leads citywide climate accountability, coordination, and equity work across buildings, energy, transportation, toxics, waste, and resilience.

With more than two decades in local government, he has served across multiple mayoral administrations and also sits on the Bay Area Air District Board, helping advance regional clean air and environmental justice policy. He is the first Asian American and first person of color to lead the department in its 30-year history.

Raised in an immigrant household in San Francisco’s Chinatown and shaped by environmental justice work in Bayview Hunters Point, Jue brings a public-service approach grounded in fairness, accountability, and trust. Under his leadership, San Francisco has continued turning climate commitments into measurable public results, including citywide greenhouse gas emissions that are down 48 percent from 1990.

He believes climate leadership should protect people in daily life through cleaner air, healthier homes, lower cost burdens, and systems people can count on. He also believes public trust is earned when institutions tell the truth, show their work, and stay accountable to community experience.
