Improving Job Quality, Worker Trust and Engagement with 4IR Technologies

The challenge

Headlines spark fear of automation-driven job loss and worker displacement driven by Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies such as artificial intelligence, but less common in the dialogue is a focus on how these technologies can improve work from the standpoint of workers and job quality.

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the comfort level of automation and augmentation-enabling technologies by employers; however, disproportionately affecting marginalized workers without college degrees, including women and people of colour. Employers, governments, employees and labour groups and other stakeholders need prioritize strategizing around how work “augmentation” can be beneficial to building a better future of work and improving job quality measures.

The opportunity

This project will help employers accelerate the adoption of 4IR technologies while boosting job quality and worker trust/engagement in such technologies by addressing two inter-connected questions:

  • Which industry 4IR technology-based tools (AI, blockchain, internet of things, 3D printing, augmented and virtual reality) are being used and could be used by employers to improve non-wage job quality indicators?

  • What strategies can employers use to give employees a voice when designing their strategies to implement said 4IR technologies such that the outcome results in increased trust, engagement, and support from workers?

Deliverables will include a cumulative white paper that includes case studies and strategies aligned with these questions. Additionally, World Economic Forum Agenda articles will disseminate findings on an as-needed basis.
