Graduate, Stanford and Georgetown Universities; PhD in Education, University of London. 1982-84, Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco. Twenty-five years of foundation and non-profit experience internationally, with a focus on improving the well-being of vulnerable children. Began career at Save the Children; 11 years in a variety of roles; eight years based Bamako, Mali, helping develop the Village Schools model, which promoted access to basic education, girls’ schooling, and community participation. Then Mali Field Office Director, West Africa Area Director and then Education Adviser for Africa, providing technical assistance for programmes in 10 countries. 1998-2001, Director, Programmes, and 2001-07, Executive Director, Netherlands-based Bernard van Leer Foundation, a private foundation that works to improve opportunities for children up to age 8 who are growing up in socially and economically difficult circumstances. 2008-14, Executive Director, Firelight Foundation, which identifies, funds, and supports promising African non-profits serving vulnerable children and families in the areas of education, resilience and health. Currently, President and Chief Executive Officer, Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. Co-Founder: International Education Funders Group; Coalition for Children Affected by AIDS. Serves of the boards of the Council on Foundations and the Pacific Council for International Policy.
