Joël Mesot

President, ETH Zurich

Joël Mesot has been President of ETH Zurich since 2019 where he also studied physics. He earned his doctoral degree in the field of solid-state physics using neutron scattering, at both ETH and the Institute Laue-Langevin (France). Following his first position at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), he spent several years at the Argonne National Laboratory in the USA, where he specialized in synchrotron techniques. In 1999, he returned to Switzerland to head the ETH and PSI’s joint laboratory for neutron scattering. From 2008 to 2018, he was Director of the PSI. Joël Mesot received several awards for his scientific achievements, among them the SPS (Swiss Physical Society) IBM Prize and the ETH Zurich Latsis Prize. He is part of several national and international advisory boards among them the Swiss Innovation Park’s Foundation Board, the Advisory Council on Digital Transformation of the Swiss Government and the Senate of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres.
