Jean-Marc Rickli

Head, Global and Emerging Risk, Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP)

Dr Rickli’s research explores two areas: small states’ security and the transformation of international security and war. His DPhil thesis at the University of Oxford was a reflection of these double concerns as it analysed the evolution of the military and security policies of European neutral states (Austria, Finland, Sweden and Switzerland) after the end of the Cold War, 1989-2004. Small states due to their reduced or lack of capabilities are offered fewer options than great or middle powers when it comes to the pursuit of their security strategies. The transformation of the international system due to globalization, however, offers new opportunities for small states to conduct their foreign and security policies. The core of Dr Rickli’s research focuses on the way small states can leverage their position by using niche strategies in the current international environment. Due to his broad international experiences Dr Rickli has expertise in both European and Middle East security.
