Francisco Goiana da Silva was born in a small town in the north of Portugal, Santo Tirso, where he had a strong Catholic Education (Jesuits' School). Kiko played the violin during 9 years at the conservatory (CCM) and became a self-made sculptor having organised several individual and collective exhibitions showcasing his marble art work.
He is a physician graduated from the University of Lisbon. Over his undergraduate studies he has taken several leadership positions in both national and international organisations, including being elected president of the Faculty of Medicine’s Student Union. During all his mandates, he implemented dozens of projects with a great social impact on health and education.
Referred by many of his peers as a politician and a medical education entrepreneur, he was responsible for the development of the first class in –"Healthcare Politics, Management and Innovation" in a Portuguese Medical School, where he lectures at the moment.
He is the first author of two published children's books: "A day in Teddy Bear Hospital" and "Matilda is Bald". After working at the Health Workforce Department - WHO Geneva, Francisco got a masters degree in International Health Management at the Imperial College Business School and a post-graduation course in Global Health Delivery at the Harvard University. Dr. Goiana-da-Silva joined the Portuguese Government on 2015 as Deputy to the Health Secretary of State. Over many responsibilities at the Portuguese Ministry of Health, he focused on the development and implementation of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention national policies such as the Portuguese Sugar Tax. In 2019, he became a consultant for NonCommunicable Diseases Prevention and Control at the World Health Organisation Regional Office for Europe. In late 2019 he was appointed Head of New Businesses on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at SONAE MC, where he actually works under the moto of helping the portuguese "living longer, younger".
Building on his medical background, his bold political vision for the future of health and his management skills (developed both in the public and private sectors), Francisco Goiana-da-Silva is among the most promising young Portuguese fellows on the health sector and set to have a top leadership role in the national and international health panorama sooner than one may expect.
