Indian start-up revolutionizes menstrual waste management

PadCare Labs has established a comprehensive circular approach to menstrual waste management, encompassing collection, recycling, and utilization of recovered materials.

To combat the environmental and health hazards posed by improper disposal of used sanitary pads, PadCare Labs, an Indian start-up, has developed an innovative recycling process that transforms discarded menstrual products into valuable resources.

This groundbreaking initiative not only diverts waste from landfills but also promotes sustainability and circularity in the menstrual hygiene sector.

PadCare's circular approach to menstrual waste management

PadCare Labs has established a comprehensive circular approach to menstrual waste management, encompassing collection, recycling, and utilization of recovered materials.

Dedicated recycling bins collect used pads, which are then transported to specialized centers where they undergo a meticulous process that separates the cellulose pulp from the plastic components.

The sanitized cellulose pulp is transformed into hygienic pulp suitable for various applications, while the recycled plastic granules are utilized to produce a range of products, including construction paper, packaging materials, fertilizer, and even new PadCare recycling bins.

Environmental and social impact

PadCare Labs' recycling initiative offers both environmental and social benefits. It reduces carbon emissions by 68% compared to incineration and conserves natural resources by utilizing recycled materials. Additionally, it promotes better sanitation and hygiene practices for women and girls by providing convenient access to proper disposal facilities.

Scaling up and expanding impact

Currently, PadCare Labs recycles 24 million sanitary pads annually, representing 0.2% of India's total menstrual waste. However, the company is committed to scaling up its operations and expanding its reach to make a more substantial impact.

As a member of The Circulars Accelerator program, PadCare Labs is collaborating with Accenture, UpLink, Ecolab, Anglo American, and AWS to further refine its recycling technology and expand its network of recycling centers and collection bins.
