How Businesses Can Support Racial Equity: From An Executive

Pamela Carter says the private sector can help create more inclusive workplaces and societies, and given that, the buying power of African Americans will reach $1.8 trillion next year. There is a strong business opportunity at play, too. Businesses are increasingly expected to tackle social and racial equity. 4 in 5 employees expect their CEOs to take a stand on these issues. But while the amount firms spend on diversity, equity and inclusion has doubled since 2020, progress remains slow. Since 2017, just 1 in 3 firms has increased the diversity of their leadership. While shrinking job opportunities have disproportionately affected minorities, the theme of this year’s Black History Month is resistance. It celebrates Black people’s resistance to oppression, from slavery and abolition to the ongoing struggles for civil and human rights.
