First, we asked them about AI. Experts ranked ‘adverse outcomes of AI technologies’ among the 3 least serious risks in the next 2 years. But over the next decade, they ranked it the 6th most serious risk. This raises the question, is there complacency around the risks of AI in the near future?

Short-term risks of AI may be underestimatedThe Global Risks Report 2025 highlights a significant shift in perceptions about AI risks. While "Adverse outcomes of AI technologies" ranks low at 31st on the list of risks over the next two years, it surges to 6th place over the next decade.

This raises concerns about whether we are too complacent about the short-term implications of AI, particularly as it amplifies challenges like misinformation and disinformation—currently the top-ranked risk for the next two years. AI-powered tools continue to fuel the spread of misleading content, deepening societal challenges.

Economic outlook shows cautious optimism

A notable change in this year’s report is the improved economic sentiment. Risks like "Inflation" and "Economic downturn," which ranked in the top 10 last year, have dropped significantly to 29th and 19th places, respectively.

This reflects a cautious optimism about the economy. However, vulnerabilities persist, particularly concerning geopolitical unrest’s potential impact on global growth. Notably, "Crime and illicit economic activity" has risen to 11th place, indicating ongoing challenges.

Intrastate violence remains an overlooked threat

Despite "State-based armed conflict" being the top short-term risk and ranking third over the next two years, "Intrastate violence" has dropped to 24th place, down seven positions from last year.

This category, encompassing riots, mass shootings, and gang violence, is closely tied to broader issues like societal polarization (ranked 4th) and inequality, the report's most interconnected risk. These findings suggest a need for more attention to domestic conflicts that could escalate amid societal tensions.
