Robert F. Smith founded Vista Equity Partners (Vista) in 2000. Today, Vista is a leading global investment firm that invests in enterprise software through private equity and credit. The firm empowers software companies to reach their full potential through an approach that prioritizes value creation. In 2023, Vista was named the Global Technology Private Equity Firm of the Year by Private Equity International.
Smith started his career as a chemical engineer after earning a B.S. in chemical engineering from Cornell University. After that, he earned an MBA from Columbia Business School and worked in mergers and acquisitions for Goldman Sachs. In 2017, Forbes named Smith one of the “100 Greatest Living Business Minds” in recognition of his innovative approach to investing.
The same year, Smith became the first Black American signatory of the Giving Pledge, marking a major step in his commitment to creating opportunities for others. In 2019, Smith eliminated the student loan debt of the entire Morehouse College graduating class, including the debt held by their guardians on their behalf. Inspired by the positive impact of his gift, he has continued helping students pursue higher education without the burden of student loan debt as Chairman of Student Freedom Initiative (SFI). SFI is a student-centered, evidence-based and holistic tax-exempt nonprofit that creates access to education without overwhelming student loan debt. The organization specifically supports students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs).
Smith is also the founding director and President of Fund II Foundation, an organization that makes grants to public charities in support of creating an enduring American legacy through social change. In 2019, Fund II Foundation launched internXL, an AI-driven platform that connects talented individuals with the professional world through paid internships and career-readiness training.
He also co-leads Southern Communities Initiative (SCI), an impact initiative harnessing the collective power of partnerships, technology and community to accelerate wealth creation and economic opportunity in underinvested communities.
As a contributor to the book “Lead Boldly: Seven Principles from Martin Luther King, Jr.,” Smith reflects on seven of Dr. King’s most impactful speeches. He also offers his own insights and reflections to bring Dr. King’s lessons to life for a new generation.
His dedication to leadership and philanthropy has led him to sit on many boards throughout the years. Smith is the Chairman of Carnegie Hall, sits on the Board of Overseers of Columbia Business School and is a Member of the Cornell Engineering College Council.
For his philanthropic commitments to uplifting communities, Smith was named one of TIME100’s “Most Influential People in Philanthropy” of 2025.
