Four ways to drive inclusive sustainable development in fragile markets
In 2023, the outlook for vulnerable communities living in fragile states, many of which are conflict-affected, is deeply troubling.
Nabil Hayel Saeed Anam is the Managing Director of HSA Yemen and Board Member of HSA Group, one of the largest conglomerates based in the Middle East. HSA Group is a family-owned business that employs 35,000 people across its operations in the Middle East, South East Asia, Europe and Africa.
As Managing Director of the Group’s operations in Yemen, Nabil is responsible for more than 50 operating companies and 20,000 employees. Under his leadership and in line with HSA’s commitment to doing well by doing good, the organisation has implemented an investment programme that seeks to future-proof its operations and ensure that it can continue to provide essential goods and services to millions every day. Through this transformation, which centres on technology infrastructure, people and talent development, manufacturing, and R&D operations, HSA Group is building a world-class institution that unlocks both individual and collective potential.
Nabil has extensive experience in adaptive strategies and crisis management, much of it gained while leading the Group’s operations in the midst of one of the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. He is also responsible for setting the strategic direction of the Group’s wide-ranging philanthropic work, which includes humanitarian and development programmes to improve food security, strengthen infrastructure and support education. Through 85 years operating in Yemen, HSA Group has gained a unique understanding of the communities it serves and uses that knowledge to best serve their needs through purpose-led innovation.
Nabil also leads many of HSA’s partnerships with global humanitarian organisations, including the World Food Programme (WFP) and the World Health Organisation (WHO), most recently in his capacity as Chair of the International Initiative on COVID-19 in Yemen (IICY), a multi-stakeholder partnership founded by HSA Group to support Yemen’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
