Kim Sajet

Director, National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution

Born in Nigeria, raised in Australia, and a citizen of the Netherlands, Director Kim Sajet brings a global perspective to the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. Through the visual arts, performing arts, and new media, the National Portrait Gallery presents poets and presidents, visionaries and villains, actors and activists whose lives form our national identity. Established by Congress in 1962 to display images of the “men and women who have made significant contributions to the history, development and culture of the people of the United States," today, the museum continues to narrate the multi-faceted and ever-changing story of America through the individuals who have shaped its culture. Since 2013, Kim has unleashed a series of experimental projects, boosted the museum board’s membership, and broadened the definition of portrait. Kim has focused on making the museum more inclusive by acquiring works representing diverse artists and subjects and by incorporating Spanish into the overall communications strategy, among other initiatives.
