These sensors can see if your tomatoes are ‘stressed’

Their inventors say they can make agriculture more sustainable while increasing crop yields at the same time. "Plants really are, in terms of biomass, the most successful organism on Earth. And so the idea behind our company is trying to understand why plants are so successful. They're not the strongest or the fastest. And where their strength comes from is from intelligence," says Carrol Plummer, CEO of Vivent

Plant sensors are a new technology that can measure stress levels in plants. This information can be used to help farmers grow more sustainable crops and increase crop yields.

How the sensors work

Plants have a kind of nervous system that transmits information via electrical signals. These electrical signals can be measured using sensors. The sensors work the same way as those used by doctors. Two electrodes are attached to a plant's stem, and the electrodes then measure the difference between two places in the stem.

Benefits of using the sensors

There are several benefits to using plant sensors. First, they can help farmers know exactly when to water or fertilize their crops. This ensures optimal growing conditions and helps to reduce the amount of inputs needed. Second, the sensors can detect stress in plants before it becomes visible. This can help farmers prevent crop loss.

A farmer near Geneva was able to prevent crop loss thanks to the sensors. The sensors showed that there was a problem with the fertilizer solution. The farmer was able to fix the problem before the whole crop died.
