MD; PhD. Formerly: Professor of Biochemistry and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, Stanford University School of Medicine; accomplishments included discovering the biochemical mechanism by which HIV inserts its genes into human cells, developing tools that for the first time enabled the expression patterns of whole genomes to be detected and profiled, and pioneering the use of gene expression patterns to improve classification, diagnosis and individualized treatment of human cancers. Currently, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Impossible Foods, which aims to replace the world's most environmentally destructive industry – animal farming – by making irresistibly delicious, healthy and affordable meats and cheeses directly from plant ingredients. Founder: Lyrical Foods, maker of Kite Hill artisanal nut-based cheeses; Public Library of Science (PLOS), a non-profit publisher that pioneered the open-access business model. Member: National Academy of Sciences; Institute of Medicine. Recipient: American Cancer Society Medal of Honor; NAS Award in Molecular Biology.
