Deputy Director-General, World Health Organization (WHO)

Master's degree, Faculty of Humanities, Eötvös Lóránd University, Budapest; postgraduate degree, University of Political Sciences, Budapest; diploma in Public Health, Nordic School of Public Health, Gothenburg, Sweden; postgraduate diploma, National Institute of Public Administration and Management, Hungary. 1975, began career in Hungary's Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, being responsible for external affairs, including relations with WHO. 1991-2002, senior management roles, WHO's Regional Office. 2002-05, State Secretary, Hungarian Ministry of Health, Social and Family Affairs; managed the country's preparations for European Union accession in the area of public health. 2005-10, Founding Director, European Union's European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Stockholm, Sweden. Currently, Regional Director for Europe, WHO; leads and guides the work of WHO in the European region, and manages the regional office.
