This Biodegradable Glitter Is Made From Wood Pulp

This plastic-free glitter is made from wood pulp. It’s sustainable, non-toxic, vegan and biodegradable and best of all, it’s just as sparkly. Scientists at Cambridge University created this biodegradable glitter from cellulose, the same matter found in plants, fruits, vegetables and wood pulp. They dried the cellulose solution into sheets of nanocrystals and ground them up into a glittery powder. Ordinary glitter is technically a microplastic, which gets into the soil and ocean, harming ecosystems and even finding its way into our food. Traditional pigments can also contain carcinogens and are much more energy-intensive to produce. The new biodegradable glitter offers an alternative that’s less harmful to children and the planet.
