These Portable Microgrids Can Restore Power When Disaster Strikes

The microgrids are built by the Footprint Project, a US-based non-profit. Their partner Schneider Electric donates funding, expertise and equipment. Diesel generators are the standard back-up option in emergencies but they emit large amounts of air pollution and CO2 and require a steady supply of fuel. As climate change leaves more extreme weather disasters in its wake these associated environmental costs will also rise. The Footprint Project’s microgrids eliminate these problems, each microgrid is monitored and managed remotely via the cloud thanks to the support of Microsoft, another technology partner. This ensures each system is performing optimally and alerts engineers immediately to any maintenance issues
