Scientists are turning emissions from landfill into sustainable aviation fuel
University of Sydney researchers have developed a new chemical process. They fire high-energy electrons into methane and carbon-dioxide gases, emitted by waste rotting in landfills. The electrons split the molecules into carbon and hydrogen atoms which then bond together again to form long chains called hydrocarbons. The building blocks of aviation fuel.
