How Japan’s Universal Healthcare Sets an Example for the World

Since 1973, Japan has also boosted the number of medical schools, especially in rural areas, to increase the number of doctors and maintain high care standards. Universal healthcare coverage (UHC) has helped life expectancy in Japan become one of the world’s highest. UHC is a key pillar for a just, equitable society. Japan is promoting Universal Healthcare Coverage in other major economies. In 2017, 30 countries adopted the Tokyo Declaration on UHC, pledging to accelerate their efforts to achieve UHC by 2030. 32 countries already offer free or universal healthcare, including Bahrain, Israel, New Zealand, and Norway.
