A German Minister Calls for Junk Food Advertising Ban For Kids

Minister of Food and Agriculture Cem Özdemir is calling for a clampdown on promoting sweets and crisps to under-14s and foods high in sugar, salt, or fat. The junk food advertising ban would restrict adverts that target kids through childlike language, design, and child actors. The ban would apply to billboards near schools and adverts in magazines as well as spots on TV, radio, and social media platforms where junk food ads could only be broadcast between 11pm and 6am. Today, 15% of German children are obese. Özdemir says the junk food advertising ban would protect health in childhood, which is when our dietary and exercise habits are formed. Watch to learn more about the proposed junk food advertising ban.
