Veena Balakrishnan

Co-Founder, Youth Negotiators Academy

I am a political scientist, entrepreneur, and a social worker. I started doing social work as a 7 year old - as a caregiver, campaigner and educator. I started my career in ethical fashion, focusing on eradicating inhumane practices in garment labour, and setting up fair trade and fair labour standards in factories. An entrepreneur focused on sustainability, I created Everwards, a marketplace for sustainable products that was built on grassroots community work combining product circularity, human rights, and social innovation. I pioneered and championed the largest ZeroWaste wedding movement in India, reducing 100s of tonnes of waste ending up in landfills. More recently, I am working on my thesis on modern leadership in climate negotiations for achieving Paris goals. I was also sustainability strategist with Siemens Technology, championing global innovation campaigns on leveraging technology for sustainability. In 2022, I Co-Founded the Youth Negotiators Academy (YNA) and the Climate Youth Negotiator Programme (CYNP) aimed at enabling youth leadership for redressing the systemic inequalities that exist in the multilateral climate negotiations and to enable young people as negotiators for the multilateral processes. On the YNA team, I am responsible for Governance and Strategy and our Fundraising and Resource Mobilisation.
