Degree in Economics, University of Costa Rica; MSc in Economics, University of Sussex. Advocate of human development, who has helped to focus the world’s attention, and also that of Latin America, on relevant issues such as the reduction of inequality and poverty, gender equality, South-South cooperation as a tool for development, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), among others. 1994-98, Vice-President of Costa Rica; also Minister of Housing, Minister Coordinator of Economic and Social Affairs, and Deputy Minister of Finance. 2001, Member of the High-Level Panel on Financing for Development, convened by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. 2006-10, United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean. 2010, named Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) and Associate Administrator of the UNDP. February 2014, elected Ibero-American Secretary-General; 2018, re-elected. Chair, Board of Trustees, International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). Member, Steering Committee, UNICEF Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement; Member, Governing Council, Society for International Development (SID); Member, ILO Global Commission on the Future of Work. Member of the Board of Trustees, Complutense Institute for International Studies (ICEI). Conference lecturer and adviser to international organizations and institutions. Recipient of awards and honours.
