Christopher A. Coons

Senator from Delaware (D), United States Senate

U.S. Senator for the State of Delaware since 2010. Senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee that funds U.S. assistance abroad. Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and incoming Chairman of the Subcommittee dealing with intellectual property, privacy, and technology matters. Also serves as Chair of the Ethics Committee and a member of the Small Business Committee. Founded and leads the bipartisan Senate Climate Solutions Caucus, which works to engage Congress with leaders from the business community, governments, and global advocates to identify meaningful ways to address climate change and strengthen U.S. competitiveness.

Before his election to the U.S. Senate replacing now-President Joe Biden, he served for a decade as a County Council President and County Executive in Delaware. Prior to public office, he worked as a senior attorney for a global multi-billion dollar manufacturing company. For decades in and out of government, he has worked to expand national service programs across the U.S. and prioritize efforts to build economic development and food aid partnerships throughout Africa, first starting this work with the South African Council of Churches during the anti-apartheid movement in 1987. Received B.A., Chemistry and Political Science, Amherst College; J.D. and Master's in Ethics, Yale University.
