Open Forum: Mega Sporting Events -- In Whose Interest?

World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2013
Loading...

Mega sport events are of great interest to regions all over the world. The costs and benefits of hosting these large-scale events are matters of continuous debate. While they are viewed by some parties as a means to stimulate economic growth, social benefits, tourism, infrastructure improvements and national pride, many others are concerned with increased taxes and cost overruns, local disruptions and «white elephant» buildings.

Dimensions to be addressed:

1. Who benefits from hosting mega events?
2. Are sporting events staged for infrastructure- and nation-building?
3. How much does athletic success matter?
4. What happens after the event has taken place?
