As hardware prices decline and compelling use cases increase, Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) technologies are becoming mainstream and entering daily life. Experts and stakeholders have begun to identify areas where these technologies can drive positive social impacts (health and education), and areas where they may lead to negative consequences (more complex data protection questions, risks of virtual harassment and safety risks). Building on its 2018 mandate, the Global Future Council on Virtual and Augmented Reality will explore and raise awareness of the positive and negative aspects of these technologies’ widespread adoption and translate dialogue from the first year of the council’s existence into tangible outputs.
