1991-95, studies, Yerevan State University; dismissed from last year of studies for political reasons. Former journalist; 1998, founded Oragir daily; 1999-2012, Editor-in-Chief, Haykakan Zhamanak daily. 1999, sentenced to one year in prison for political motives; Court of Appeals delayed the imprisonment for a year; as a result, the imprisonment was never enforced. 2007, founded the Alternative Public-Political association. During 2008 presidential election, participated in campaign of presidential candidate Levon Ter-Petrosyan. Armenians protested the results, claiming fraud and demanding the annulment of the election results. Authorities used force against demonstrators and started investigations against demonstration organizers. July 2009, came out of hiding and surrendered. January 2010, arrested and sentenced to seven years on charges of organizing mass disorder. Has been widely recognized as a prisoner of conscience in Armenia and by the international community. Spent one year and 11 months in prison; released in May 2011. 2012, elected to the National Assembly. 2012-13, Chairman, NA Ethics Committee. 2013, founded the Civil Contract public-political association and since 2015, Member of the Board. April 2017, re-elected to the National Assembly. From May 2017, headed the National Assembly’s Yelk parliamentary faction. Initiated and led a non-violent, velvet revolution. Since May 2018, Prime Minister of Armenia.
